6 signs your senior pet needs stairs or a ramp
Small changes in how your dog or cat jumps often come before bigger joint problems. Here's what to watch for.
1. They pause before jumping
A long look at the sofa or bed before jumping, or giving up altogether, usually means the jump has started to hurt.
2. They cry or wait to be lifted
Whining at the bedside or waiting at the car door is a polite request for help. A ramp gives that independence back.
3. Stiffness after resting
Slow, stiff first steps after a nap are common with arthritis. Every jump down lands on those same sore joints.
4. Slips and missed landings
Misjudged jumps and paws sliding on landing are a sign of weaker back legs and a real fall risk.
5. Sleeping in new places
If your pet stops joining you on the bed, it's often not preference — it's that getting up is too hard.
6. Your vet mentions joints
If your vet has noted arthritis, hip dysplasia or back problems, cutting out jumps is one of the simplest changes you can make. Always follow your vet's advice.
